Rendition
The Material Reflection show, in large measure, was inspired by this piece, Rendition created in 2007. The strong iconographic presence of Rendition led me into a series of reflections upon the embodiment of meaning in form. As a conceptualist and postmodernist, I realize that the object itself has no meaning other than that which is supplied by the viewer. Yet certain objects can resonate with a shared sense of meaning. These meanings, of course, are individually generated rather than universal. What Rendition made me realize was that starting with the assumption that meaning was individually generated, this experience of meaning could nonetheless be crafted. A strongly iconographic object produces a strong emotional reaction. But if you also include hints to an alternate or more nuanced reading of the object, this can lead the viewer to the generation of deep and rich experience of the object and its relationship to the viewer.
Rendition was originally documented here.
