Egg

There were a number of origins for this piece, but perhaps most predominantly the African proverb on political power. "Political power must be held as you would hold an egg: firmly so that you do not drop it, but gently or it will break."

This piece is about restrained potential. It uses a strongly mechanistic form, the base, to hold a strongly organic form, the egg. Yet neither of these two elements are "pure," as there are organic elements in the base, and mechanistic elements in the egg. The two compositional elements therefore provide a male/female or ying/yang duality, and this duality is supported and strengthened by formal details.

Although it is static, this piece gives a strong impression of something about to happen. It is a meditation on the motive force behind the restrained dualism that comprises much of our human existence.
