1096 [As of 10/13/2004]
The main idea behind "1096 [As of 10/13/2004]" was to give tangible physical form to an abstract number. To achieve this, 1096 Burnt matches, were placed in a 1" x 1" grid, the resulting field measured 4'x10'.
The sobering presence of this piece belies the fact that it is both grossly innacurate and one-sided. At least 10 times (with some estimates up to 100 times) as many Iraqis had lost their lives as a direct result of our military intervention at this same time point.
Updating this installation with a current (2007) number would require a space nearly three times as large as the original.
